Known better by its abbreviation, CD, a computer or compact disc is a polycarbonate with one or more metal layers capable of storing digital information. The most prevalent types of computer or compact discs are those used by the music industry to store digital recordings and CD-ROMS used to store computer data. Both of these types of computer or compact disc are read-only, which means that once the data has been recorded onto them, they can only be read or played. A CD-R can only record data once and then the data becomes permanent on the disc. The disc cannot be recorded onto a second time. The data on a CD-RW can be erased and recorded over numerous times without damaging the medium.
